Deftones es una banda de California con varios álbumes que han logrado ventas multi-platino. Sus integrantes son Chino Moreno (vocalista), Stephen "Stef" Carpenter (guitarrista), Abraham "Abe" Cunningham (baterista), Chi Ling Dai Cheng (bajo) y Frank Delgado (tornamesa, samples, teclados).
Las letras de Moreno (descritas por la crítica de la revista Time como “furiosamente inteligentes”), son a menudo evocadoras y suficientemente ambiguas para permitir interpretaciones múltiples. Moreno ha mencionado a Morrissey, Duran Duran y Robert Smith de The Cure y David Gahan de Depeche Mode entre sus cantantes favoritos, y más allá de la similitud ocasional en la técnica vocal, el sentido arrollador de dramatismo y delicada vulnerabilidad de estos cantantes es a menudo evidente en las interpretaciones de Moreno.
El género musical al que corresponde Deftones es otro de los puntos más discutidos. Comúnmente englobados en el Nu Metal, la banda ha sido descrita desde Alternative Metal, Rap Metal hasta Rock Alternativo, progresivo y experimental.
Tool es una banda contemporánea de metal de Estados Unidos cuya música se basa fuertemente en los sonidos del metal alternativo y el rock alternativo, con algunos tintes de metal progresivo (la banda cita como influencia al sonido de King Crimson[1] ). Formada en 1990 en Los Angeles, California, cuando Danny Carey (batería) se unió a su vecino Maynard James Keenan (voz), Adam Jones (guitarra) y Paul D'Amour (bajo) para ensayar. Desde ese momento Tool ha sido conocida como una banda algo oscura, con un sonido apreciado por su complejidad. Además, Tool se caracteriza por sus canciones largas, generalmente de más de seis minutos, temas cortos y completamente instrumentales ("Eon Blue Apocalypse") y el contenido de sus letras, que tratan temas que van desde el abuso sexual (“Prison Sex”), la religión (“Sober”), la trascendencia (“Lateralus”) y la comunicación (“Schism”), así como por sus complejos cambios de ritmos y la voz de Maynard James Keenan. Tool se ganó la admiración de la crítica con su disco más destacado: Ænima. Además, los integrantes de Tool rara vez conceden entrevistas y solo aparecieron en dos de sus siete vídeos: en “Hush” y brevemente en el video de “Sober”.

Tool se forma a fines de la década de los 80's en Los Angeles. Llamaron la atención de la escena del metal alternativo con su primer EP, Opiate (1992) y su primer LP Undertow (1993) y por las curiosas historias que giraban alrededor de la banda, como la de la “lacrimología” (ver etimología de Tool) y por sus polémicos videos “Prison Sex” y “Hush”. En 1995 D’Amour dejó la banda, siendo reemplazado por Justin Chancellor. Tool gana aun más popularidad con Ænima (1996), que contiene la canción "Ænema", que les haría ganar un premio Grammy; pero vuelve a tener problemas con sus videos, en este caso por el de “Stinkfist”. Keenan, cantante de Tool, funda una banda paralela: A Perfect Circle. Luego de alejar los rumores que hablaban de una posible separación con el box set de rarezas, versiones y temas en vivo Salival (2000); Tool, ya famosa en todo el mundo, graba su tercer disco de estudio: Lateralus (2002) que le da su segundo premio Grammy por la canción “Schism”. Luego de editar unos DVDs, la banda lanzó en 2006 10,000 Days, iniciando una gira por Europa, EE. UU., Japón y Australia.

La banda surgió cuando el guitarrista Billy Howerdel conoce a Maynard James Keenan, cuando Howerdel tenía la posición de técnico en guitarras en la banda Tool, durante la grabación del álbum Ænima. Howerdel le entregó unos demos al vocalista de Tool, Maynard James Keenan, quien se propuso a sí mismo como vocalista.
Se dice que el proyecto original de Billy Howerdel, suponía temas muy largos, suficientemente largos como para ser la banda sonora completa de una película, además de tener una voz femenina.
Posteriormente se les unieron Paz Lenchantin, Josh Freese y Troy Van Leeuwen y grabaron su primer álbum Une Cascade De Prénoms Pour Une Mer De Noms, francés para "una cascada de nombres para un mar de apellidos", simplificado en el conocido "Mer De Noms", donde la mayoría de los tracks poseen nombres personales, como "Magdalena", "Judith", "Rose", "Thomas", "Orestes", etc.
Durante un tiempo de descanso, se separaron Paz Lenchantin (yéndose a Zwan) y Troy Van Leeuwen (a Queens of the Stone Age), y entonces se les unieron Jeordie White, también conocido como Twiggy Ramirez, debido a su posición en la banda Marilyn Manson, y James Iha, guitarrista de la desmembrada banda The Smashing Pumpkins.
Con la nueva formación sale el álbum Thirteenth Step, con un sonido considerado más tranquilo, para el 2 de noviembre de 2004, coincidiendo con las elecciones presidenciales en EE. UU., se lanza el álbum eMOTIVE, con versiones de paz, guerra, libertad, etc., y junto a este álbum, se lanzó también el paquete aMOTION, que incluye un DVD con presentaciones en vivo y todos los videos de la banda, así como también se incluye un CD de remezclas.
En este paquete, se menciona la formación de A Perfect Circle de la siguiente manera: Maynard James Keenan, Billy Howerdel, Josh Freese, Danny Lohner (de Nine Inch Nails), Paz Lenchantin, Troy van Leeuwen, Jeordie White, James Iha y Tim Alexander...
